There are agencies all over the country whose job it is to provide studios, production companies, theatres, directors, choreographers, and photographers with the talent that they need to get their projects off the ground and into reality. Their job is also supposed to be to get you work, as an actor, for example. What agencies have that most of us as actors don't, are connections and relationships with the people whose business it is to create movies, TV shows, plays, and other types of projects and performances. This is what you need in order to find work as an actor. Agencies are the middleman between you and your acting part.

In fact, agencies don't actually give you the parts either. They will send you on an audition, or casting call, and then it 's up to you to do the work of showing the casting director or whoever you are auditioning for that you are the best actor for the job. Some big time actors do have agents from the top agencies that will basically negotiate giving a part to them, but this consists generally of getting a copy of the script into their hands and letting them decide for themselves. We as struggling actors will have to work very hard to obtain this luxury.

The difficulty with most agencies for an unknown actor is that for one thing, they have no idea who you are or what kind of actor you are, so what motivation or inclination can they have to recommend you to one of their clients? Agencies have many actors on their roster, and many of those have already been "road tested" so to speak. Agencies also, of course, will have their favorites, who because of their connections, something that they see in them, or something they see that they can get from them, will be sent out on more auditions than a new person off the street. Make sure you do careful research on at least three agencies before you sign up!
