Did you ever imagine that there was such a thing as casting extras? Or did you think that they just called a bunch of random people in and then took their pick from that lot to fill in the spaces where they needed to put people for that day? Well, you're partly right, part of casting extras is that they do look over all the people they have for one particular day and pick certain people who they know they are going to use for certain scenes, but there is much more to it than that that goes on before everyone arrives on the set.
Believe it or not, the process of casting extras is very similar to the process of casting for principle roles. First of all, there are agencies whose sole purpose is casting extras. The filmmakers create an overall profile of the project they are working on for them, listing the settings of the movies various locations, general types of people they need to see in certain scenes, and people who will be featured doing specific things like playing a sport or a musical instrument.
Casting extras can be a challenge, since sometimes many different types are required, and if they are difficult to locate, they've got to be found one way or another or the job is not complete. Even though one tall punk rocker with a nose ring may only appear leaning against the wall smoking a cigarette in one scene of the movie, it could be an image that the director is counting on to create a certain feeling in the scene. Without the tall punk rocker, the show cannot go on! Who said that casting extras wasn't an important job?
