The extras are actually the stars of the show. Sure, they earn the smallest paychecks of anyone on the set, and get basically no respect from "real" actors and the rest of the crew, work long hours repeating the same motions over and over again, but the truth is, without the extras, movies would be a barren wasteland of empty sets and lonely city streets. Some of the extras that you meet are the most interesting people you may ever know. Many of them are not even doing it for the money (thank goodness), many of them are not doing it because they want to be a famous actor. They work as extras because it is fun.

Extras may indeed work long hours, and maybe some people on the crews and some actors don't give them respect, but what other job pays you (although admittedly not very well, unless you work a seventeen hour day and earn ridiculous overtime bonuses), to use your acting skills (to what extent is really up to you, regardless of how much of it you think will show up on camera, - in fact, when extras really put themselves into the scene and truly work their parts, you can feel the effect of this energy in the scene), and be on the set involved with the shooting of a motion picture or television show, learning all about how these things are put together?

Extras are, in fact, very much respected by many crew people, because they have witnessed how hard extras work, and the results of that hard work when the project is finished. Many well-known and established "rich and famous" actors also give extras respect because they remember what it was like to be a struggling actor and doing extra work themselves. Many actors go out of their way to be nice to the extras in the set and try to make their experience as pleasant as possible. If you are apprehensive about joining the ranks of the hard working extras of the world, don't be afraid. There are many benefits, and many things to be learned.
